Introduction

Why are there so many different USB-C hubs on the market? A quick search on Amazon reveals thousands of different products with various capabilities and form factors but no easy way to sort through them. What if you don’t need a 15-in-1 monstrosity? What if all you need is more USB-C ports?

Below I’ve compared 30+ USB-C hubs that have multiple USB-C downstream outputs. In the chart, I’ve detailed how power is accepted by the hub and delivered to downstream devices among other features important to USB-C users.

Portable USB-C hubs (27)

Unless otherwise indicated, all models have an integrated USB-C cable, 4.5W power, and 5Gb/s data without DP alt mode video on each downstream port. See this reddit post for info on newer hubs that also have DP alt mode output

Charging-only

Some rack-mount chargers can have 16+-ports and up to 500W power supplies. These are not intended for home/office use and are only suitable for lab environments. Some have no data capabilities while others have USB 2.0 to help with automated tablet/phone testing when wi-fi isn’t reliable: https://www.coolgear.com/product-category/usb-c-products/usb-c-chargers

Please let me know of additional data hubs with multiple downstream USB-C ports, especially those that support PD charging at >15W (5V @ 3A) or greater or that have DisplayPort alt mode available on the ports.

Thunderbolt 3 docks?

There are several docks that work on either TB3 or USB-C systems with two downstream USB-C ports including HP TB3/USB-C Dock G2, Plugable TBT3-UDC1, Kensington SD5500T, or the Goodway DBC14A0. These docks have reduced functionality when used on USB-C systems though.

Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 docks?

See the separate article on TB4/USB4 docks.

  1. I’m trying to find a hub that accepts an 8k displayport to usb-c monitor connector. How would I determine if the usb-c is compatible? Is 10gbps enough for such applications?

    • Hi – the data bandwidth cited above is not relevant – what you need to know is your devices need to support DisplayPort 1.4 Alt mode. Are you trying to connect an 8K display to a PC via a docking station?

      • I’ve been trying to connect my 10-bit HDR 4k monitor to my thunderbolt laptop. I needed to use a DisplayPort 1.4 cable. I used the cable matters “Cable Matters Short USB C to DisplayPort Cable (USB-C to DisplayPort Cable, USB C to DP Cable) Supporting 8K 60Hz in Black 3.3 ft” from Amazon. I contacted CableMatters and they notified my that they currently don’t have any DisplayPort 1.4 cables that also support plug-in usb-c charging.

Ideally I would be able to connect a small dock with power + the ability to connect the DisplayPort 1.4 cable to usb-c + other usb-c devices.

  2. Hi,

How about ones with just one downstream port with decent power (1.5-2.4A)?
Basically, I want data from one source and power from another combined into one USB-C port.
Or is there an easier solution?
    Thanks

  3. Are there any hubs with USB ( Type-C or 3.0) that provides around 10W to charge mobile devices and Raspberry PI apart from charging laptop?

  4. Great summary

    I would add also

    Exsys USB Hub EX-1237HMVS (3+4 ports) – 10Gbps

    Corsair USB100 – also nice

I can recommend both after a bit of use.

  5. There appears to be an clone/import of the InLine 3539B as the Wavlink WL-UHP515. I don’t have the 3935B to do a full compare. The specs appear to be the same. The UHP515 I received looks very similar to the 3539B. The silkscreen does not have the port labels. The instructions list the same port layout of PD 87W USB C on the cable end followed by 3 x USB C 10G ports. The hub has a USB ID of 2109:0822.

  6. The article referneces “See this separate article for hub that has DP alt mode to support monitors” but there is no link for this. Im just lookin for a usb c hub with ports so i can power it and run video out usb c dp alt more to a portable monitor, while connecting it to a steam deck. why does this seem so hard

    • Sorry about that. I fixed that part of the article. I think I meant to link to this reddit post of mine: https://www.mslforces.com/cable-and-adapter/usb4-thunderbolt4-hoover-ridge-5-in-1-hub-60w.html

I don’t know if the MSL hub ever shipped, but I did review the Sparkle hub that has USB-C w DP alt mode: https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/2023/09/11/sparkle-td-8140-usb4-travel-dock-review-teardown-intel-hoover-ridge-jhl8140-dock/

At some point, I’ll write an article about all the JHL8140-based portable hubs (a bunch are supposed to hit the market this month and ought to have USB-C DP/Alt outputs!)

      • thanks for some reason finding hubs with either multiple usb c output or pd+ dp alt mode is hard. Most come with ports i dont need.
Im specifically looking at this for two automotive projects im working on with similar designs.
        1) using a 7 inch touch screen usb c monitor, mounting it in the stock navigation hood of the car and then hardwiring a usb c kit for power and running it off my phone using desktop mode. so a small hub which provides pd power + the hardwire kit to be hidden behind the radio is ideal.

        2) Another similar concept but with a 10.1in usb c touchscreen monitor(two usb c inputs) with either a mini pc or a sbc in the car also hardwired the car for diagnostic and tuning capabilites. The hardwire will power the pc and the usb output will power the monitor. this along side of running something similar to the first where i can also connect my phone/steamdeck into the system though not sure if pd from the hardwire > pc > monitor > phone/steamdeck will be enough power to charge and run all 3. so if can have power through a small hub should be enough for all devices

Im at about 99% of what i need for everything usb cables included. just need to make sure all devices have adequate power.
